feudal mounds
In the early hours of the Duchy of Normandy, then seu-ing County still marked by the devastating raids of the Vikings, the local lords built fortified settlements called feudal mounds today. It was round mounds, earth, surrounded by a moat. Above was a wooden tower connected to the outer edge by a single narrow ramp. Sometimes enhanced by the addition of stone, these lumps prefigured feudal castles and dungeons. During your walks, you may have the opportunity to cross one: to Bretteville du Grand Caux, Bec de Mortagne, but especially in Gonfreville-clot where it was highlighted. Built in the eleventh century, is one of the few to have moats. Excavations have even allowed to find traces of the farm involved. On site, a panel will explain everything on this feudal mound.
